Jesse Pollak, the creator of Coinbase’s Base network, is stepping back from leading the Base App after acknowledging that his bet on social apps driving crypto adoption did not pay off.
Admitting the Miscalculation
In a Wednesday post on X, Pollak said he had wagered that creator, content, and messaging apps would pull users into crypto. Instead, that market “disintegrated completely,” in his words. He said the focus on social products left Base trailing in prediction markets and perpetual futures, two areas that turned out to matter far more.

The Numbers Behind the Shift
Data from Dune Analytics shows Base-native prediction market platform Limitless captured just 0.5% of total monthly notional volume across the prediction market sector in July. Separately, DefiLlama figures place Base’s perpetual DEX, Avantis, at 18th by 30-day trading volume, well behind larger rivals.
A New Direction for Base
Pollak said he will now hand day-to-day leadership of the Base App back to Coinbase, under Jordan Fish, known online as “Cobie,” while he shifts his own focus to the underlying Base blockchain. He said financial products, including trading, payments, and AI agents, are now the network’s priority.
His comments follow Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong’s admission days earlier that content coins “didn’t work,” a statement that pushed the company toward this pivot. Base had already ended its Creator Rewards program and Farcaster-linked social feed in February as part of this change in direction.

Building Toward Financial Infrastructure
Base recently activated its B20 token standard for stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets. It also launched Base MCP in May, letting users manage crypto through AI chat interfaces, and outlined an AI agent economy roadmap in April centered on stablecoins, RWA tokenization, and prediction markets.
“We’re going to build Base into the blockchain for global finance,” Pollak said.
