Bitcoin Volatility Hits Multi-Month Low, But Downside Protection Stays Costly
Bitcoin's implied volatility index, BVIV, dropped to its lowest level since last September over the weekend, sliding to just above 35% as the cryptocurrency continues trading in a narrow range between roughly $62,000 and $66,000. The measure, often described as bitcoin's version of a fear index, stands in sharp contrast to earlier this year when it spiked above 90% during a steep price decline.

Bitcoin’s implied volatility index, BVIV, dropped to its lowest level since last September over the weekend, sliding to just above 35% as the cryptocurrency continues trading in a narrow range between roughly $62,000 and $66,000. The measure, often described as bitcoin’s version of a fear index, stands in sharp contrast to earlier this year when it spiked above 90% during a steep price decline.

Options Market Sees Supply Outpace Demand
According to a derivatives expert at crypto prime brokerage FalconX, the decline reflects a broader imbalance between options supply and demand. As bitcoin’s price stays range-bound, fewer traders are betting on major price swings, while investors, including miners and corporate treasuries, increasingly sell call options through yield-generating strategies. This growing supply of options has helped suppress overall volatility, further compounded by typically thinner summer trading activity.
Traders Still Paying Extra for Crash Protection
Despite the calm on the surface, demand for downside insurance remains elevated, with put options still pricier than calls, signaling lingering caution about a deeper downturn. Some analysts warn that low volatility can create a false sense of safety, encouraging riskier borrowing and leverage without adequate protection against sudden price swings.
