Dismissal of Ukraine’s Defence Minister Triggers Rare Public Protests

Ukraine saw rare wartime protests on Thursday after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy removed defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, exposing a public rift with the country’s top general.

Fedorov, 35, known for pushing to modernize Ukraine’s military against Russia, was left out of Zelenskiy’s latest cabinet overhaul, his second in a year. Hundreds protested in Kyiv and other cities, while a senior air force commander resigned.

Fedorov’s Response

Fedorov said he declined an advisory role and accused army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi of blocking ministry initiatives rather than solving problems. Syrskyi has faced past criticism over a rigid command style linked to heavier troop losses.

A New Government Takes Shape

Energy executive Sergii Koretskyi was approved to lead the new government, with lawmakers suggesting interior minister Ihor Klymenko could take over defence. Drone warfare leader Pavlo Yelizarov resigned in protest, calling the move harmful to Ukraine’s defence.

Protests Outside the President’s Office

Over 1,000 protesters gathered outside Zelenskiy’s office, echoing similar demonstrations last July. Some demanded Syrskyi’s removal instead, praising Fedorov’s reform record.

Zelenskiy has not directly addressed the dismissal but said he expects greater coordination ahead. The Kremlin said leadership changes alone won’t matter without a broader peace settlement.
