Ethereum Could Become Fully Zero-Knowledge Powered Within Five Years, Says Joe Lubin
Ethereum could transform into a fully zero knowledge (ZK) proof based blockchain within the next three to five years, according to Consensys CEO Joe Lubin. He believes ongoing advancements in ZK technology and Layer 2 networks are strengthening Ethereum’s long-term scaling strategy.

Zero-Knowledge Technology Could Reshape Ethereum
Speaking about Ethereum’s future, Lubin said innovations such as ZK proving and better network composability are giving new momentum to the rollup-centric roadmap. He highlighted initiatives like Lean Ethereum, a proposal by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake that aims to simplify and strengthen the Ethereum mainnet using advanced cryptography.
Lubin said Ethereum could eventually operate as a fully ZK proof based protocol supported by multiple formally verified provers. This would improve security, scalability and communication between Ethereum and Layer 2 networks.
Ethereum Foundation Refocuses Scaling Efforts
Ethereum’s scaling strategy has faced criticism in recent months. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin previously noted that many Layer 2 networks evolved into what he described as “branded shards,” leading to fragmented liquidity and user activity across the ecosystem.
As a result, Ethereum developers are placing renewed focus on making the main network faster and cheaper while maintaining decentralization and security. Lean Ethereum aims to process more than 10,000 transactions per second, while the ecosystem is also exploring native privacy and quantum-resistant technologies.
Layer 2 Networks Remain Important
Despite the criticism, Lubin said Layer 2 networks remain essential because they allow developers to test new technologies before bringing them to Ethereum’s main chain. He pointed to projects such as Linea and Gnosis, which are already using real time zero knowledge proofs to improve interoperability between networks.
According to Lubin, future ZK-powered systems could allow users to move assets across Ethereum-based networks without bridges, helping unify fragmented liquidity and create a smoother user experience across the ecosystem.
