Ethereum Researchers Back Buterin’s Long-Term Vision, But Push for Faster Delivery

“Lean Ethereum” Roadmap Wins Broad Support

An updated long-term roadmap for Ethereum, first introduced earlier in the year and revised again recently, is getting a largely positive response from the network’s top researchers and developers. The plan outlines sweeping changes meant to make the blockchain faster, cheaper to operate, more private, and better protected against future risks like quantum computing. While full implementation remains years away, many in the community say the overall direction is the right one.

Developers Agree on Direction, Disagree on Timeline

One prominent cryptography researcher praised the plan’s emphasis on privacy and quantum resistant security as a smart shift, but argued that a three-to-four-year timeline is too slow, especially for quantum protection. A former Ethereum Foundation researcher echoed that concern, calling the vision exciting but insisting the network should aim to deliver key upgrades within roughly a year, even suggesting AI tools could help speed up the work.

Some Technical Questions Remain

Other researchers focused on details, questioning proposed changes to how the network stores account and contract data, and noting how priorities have shifted since the roadmap’s earlier draft. Overall, the debate centers less on what to build and more on how quickly it can happen.
