Cruise Ship Hantavirus Cases Spread Across Multiple Countries

Health authorities across several countries are working to trace and contain a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius after the World Health Organization confirmed five infections among connected passengers. In total, eight cases have been reported, including three deaths involving a Dutch couple and a German national.

The outbreak is associated with the Andes virus strain, which is the only hantavirus known to allow limited human-to-human transmission through close and prolonged contact. WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the situation is serious but assessed the overall public health risk as low, while noting that additional cases may still appear due to the virus’s incubation period of one to six weeks.

Passenger Isolation, International Tracking, and WHO Response

Around 146 passengers from 23 countries, including 17 Americans, remain onboard the vessel under strict precautionary measures. Some passengers have already been airlifted for treatment in Europe, while others are scheduled to disembark in Spain’s Canary Islands for onward travel coordination.

Passenger evacuations and international response

A third British national with suspected infection is on Tristan da Cunha, while two others are confirmed, one stable in the Netherlands after evacuation and another in intensive care in South Africa. The ship is expected in Spain’s Canary Islands for coordinated disembarkation and UK repatriation with isolation on return. WHO has deployed an expert onboard, sent 2,500 diagnostic kits to five countries, and continues global coordination under International Health Regulations to manage containment and testing.
