Republican commentator Steve Hilton and Democrat former US Health Secretary Xavier Becerra have taken an early lead in California’s 2026 governor primary, according to partial results from election night. With more than 73% of precincts reporting, Hilton led with 26.9% of the vote while Becerra followed closely at 25.8%, separated by roughly 46,000 votes.
If the trend continues, the race could set up a direct Republican vs Democrat showdown in the November general election under California’s “jungle primary” system, where the top two candidates advance regardless of party.
Strong Competition From Other Candidates
Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer was in third place with 19.7%, trailing the leaders by a significant margin. Several other candidates remained in the race but failed to reach double digit support, showing a clear divide between the top contenders and the rest of the field.
Becerra, a former US congressman and California attorney general, previously served as US Health Secretary. A victory would make him the first Latino governor in a state where nearly 40% of residents are Hispanic or Latino.
Hilton Campaign Focuses on Change Message
Hilton, a British-born former media host and adviser to former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, campaigned heavily on issues such as homelessness, cost of living, and government regulation. He has positioned himself as a challenger to long-standing Democratic leadership in California.
Speaking to supporters, he highlighted his immigrant background and framed his campaign as a movement for political change.
Broader Political Stakes in California
The primary also reflects shifting political dynamics in the state, including debates over homelessness, housing affordability, and public safety. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also led early results in her re-election race, while facing strong competition from multiple challengers.
Beyond state politics, the election is being watched for its potential impact on congressional control, following recent redistricting efforts that could reshape US House seat distribution in upcoming elections.
