Platform to Support UK’s First Digital Sovereign Bond

HSBC Orion will function as a digital securities depository within the sandbox, supporting digitally native bond issuance, including the United Kingdom’s planned digital sovereign bond, known as the Digital Gilt Instrument, as well as corporate bonds. The bank said its platform has already facilitated more than $5 billion in digital bond issuances worldwide.

First Transaction Expected Early Next Year

According to HM Treasury, the first transaction involving the new digital sovereign bond is expected by the first quarter of 2027. HSBC has also signed an agreement with the London Stock Exchange Group to develop connectivity aimed at supporting investor access to the upcoming pilot issuance. The Digital Securities Sandbox, launched in 2024, is jointly operated by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority to test distributed ledger technology in a live regulatory setting.
