Iran Outlines Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz, Security Official Says

Iran is drawing up a formal list of demands that must be met before it will allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, according to a senior Iranian security official, with ending the ongoing regional conflict listed as one of the key conditions.

According to the official, Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on a shipping route through the strait, with sections passing through both countries’ waters. Vessels would be permitted to use a designated central channel if the United States agrees to Iran’s terms.

Sticking Points With Washington

Iranian officials have indicated that reopening the waterway depends on the US lifting what Tehran describes as a blockade on Iranian ports, along with sanctions relief and compensation. Talks between the two sides on the broader agreement are reportedly still ongoing.
