The United States and Iran have unveiled a 14-point interim agreement aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and creating a path toward a broader peace settlement.

Under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, both sides agreed to immediately and permanently halt military operations and refrain from future threats or use of force. The agreement also includes commitments to respect each other’s sovereignty and avoid interference in internal affairs.

Strait of Hormuz Reopens as Trade Routes Restore

A key part of the deal focuses on restoring maritime traffic. The United States agreed to remove its naval blockade and related restrictions within 30 days, while Iran pledged to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman.

Iran will also work with Oman and other Gulf states on the future administration of the strategic waterway.

Sanctions Relief and Nuclear Talks

The agreement outlines plans for the eventual removal of U.S., international and secondary sanctions as part of a final deal. Washington also committed to issuing waivers for Iranian oil exports and making frozen Iranian assets available for use.

On the nuclear issue, Iran reaffirmed that it will not seek or develop nuclear weapons. Both countries agreed to negotiate the future of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles under supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The memorandum further includes a proposed $300 billion reconstruction and economic development framework for Iran and establishes a joint mechanism to monitor implementation. Negotiators are expected to begin talks on a final agreement in Switzerland, with a target of reaching a broader settlement within 60 days.
