Iran Threatens To Abandon US Deal Amid Ongoing Strait Of Hormuz Clashes

Iran has warned it will no longer consider itself bound by its agreement with the United States if Washington continues violating the terms. Iran's UN ambassador said in New York that continued US military action against Iran's sovereignty would void Tehran's obligations under what is known as the Islamabad Understanding, a deal brokered with Pakistani mediation.

Iran has warned it will no longer consider itself bound by its agreement with the United States if Washington continues violating the terms. Iran’s UN ambassador said in New York that continued US military action against Iran’s sovereignty would void Tehran’s obligations under what is known as the Islamabad Understanding, a deal brokered with Pakistani mediation.

Ceasefire Unravels After Hormuz Exchanges

The agreement followed an April ceasefire, but recent fighting near the Strait of Hormuz has pushed both sides toward renewed conflict. President Trump declared the ceasefire over on Friday, though he said talks with Iran would continue. Washington has demanded Iran publicly commit to keeping the strait open and pledge not to target civilian vessels, warning of consequences if Tehran refuses.

Iran says it won’t negotiate until the US resolves Strait of Hormuz transit issues and normalizes Iranian oil exports. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Oman on Saturday for related discussions.

Leadership Tensions Persist

Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called for revenge over his father’s death, though he has not appeared publicly since taking the post following the February strikes that killed former leader Ali Khamenei. Trump separately warned of a forceful response to any assassination attempt against him.
