Iran’s national football team has received visas to enter the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending uncertainty just 10 days before its opening match. The development comes after concerns were raised by Iranian officials over delays in visa processing for the squad.

While players have been cleared to travel, several key administrative officials are still waiting for approval. Reports indicate that Executive Director Mehdi Kharati, Football Federation Secretary General Hedayat Mombini and Media Director Mohsen Motamedkia had not yet received visas.

Visa Delays Create Tensions Before Tournament

Iran’s Football Federation criticized the situation, arguing that denying visas to members of the team’s management and support staff conflicts with international sporting principles. The federation said it plans to raise the matter with FIFA and seek a resolution before the tournament progresses.

Amid the visa uncertainty, Iran relocated its training base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. Team officials said the move was made to reduce logistical challenges and ensure preparations continue smoothly.

Iran is scheduled to arrive in Tijuana before traveling to the United States for its Group G matches. The team will face New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by games against Belgium and Egypt.

Politics and Sport Intersect at 2026 World Cup

The tournament marks the first World Cup in which a host nation is simultaneously involved in a military conflict with a participating country. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that individuals linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would not be permitted entry.

Despite ongoing tensions, Iranian officials say the country’s participation reflects its commitment to international competition and continued efforts toward diplomacy and peace.
