Iran is preparing a new traffic control system for the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes, raising concerns across global energy markets. Around 20% of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway every day.
Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi said the government is developing a “professional mechanism” that would manage ship movement and introduce transit fees for commercial vessels. Reports also suggest that only countries cooperating with Iran may receive safe passage access.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has reportedly released a new navigation map that moves shipping lanes closer to Iranian territory, placing vessel movement under tighter Iranian supervision.
Global Oil Market Watches Hormuz Situation Closely
Iran has also warned that military ships from hostile countries may be blocked from using the route. The development comes as tensions continue rising in West Asia.
US President Donald Trump warned Iran of serious consequences if peace efforts fail, while Russia and China called for a permanent ceasefire to prevent further escalation and disruption to global trade.
