Kraken’s parent company Payward is transforming from a crypto exchange operator into a broader financial infrastructure provider, spending billions on acquisitions covering futures trading, tokenized stocks and banking services across the U.S. and Europe. The Wyoming based firm describes its approach as building one unified platform rather than a collection of separate businesses.

One Ledger Powers Multiple Business Lines

At the core of the strategy sits what company leadership calls a single ledger system, allowing money and assets to move seamlessly between trading, banking, asset management and business services without relying on traditional financial intermediaries. Kraken currently serves about 6.6 million funded accounts holding between $40 billion and $50 billion in assets across more than 190 countries.

Strategic Acquisitions Fill Infrastructure Gaps

Payward paid $1.5 billion for NinjaTrader to establish a U.S. futures brokerage and followed with a $550 million purchase of Bitnomial for derivatives infrastructure. The company is also pursuing a European bank acquisition. Beyond acquisitions, Payward has partnered with established institutions including Nasdaq, which invested $100 million while collaborating on tokenized equity products, and the London Stock Exchange for tokenized public shares.

Rather than waiting for regulatory clarity, the company continues expanding its infrastructure model, arguing that established financial trust and blockchain technology can work together rather than compete.
