Magnitude 6 Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush Region

A strong magnitude 6 earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Tremors were felt as far as Kabul and across the border into Pakistan. The quake hit at a depth of 100 km. Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, though checks were still ongoing.

Earlier Quake In Pakistan Causes Injuries

A separate magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit Pakistan earlier the same day. More than 20 people were injured and dozens of houses damaged in Musakhail district, according to the district’s deputy commissioner. Balochistan’s disaster management authority reported around 125 houses damaged, with relief teams dispatched along with tents, food, solar panels and blankets.

Panic In Swat District

Residents in Pakistan’s Swat district ran out of their homes in panic, according to local residents . “It was very huge here in Swat and it lasted for quite a long time,” he said, adding women and children were seen crying. No casualties were reported there. Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the damage and ordered an urgent response from authorities.
