Moonbeam Shifts From Polkadot to Base to Launch AI Agent Network

Polkadot-based interoperability project Moonbeam is moving its operations to Ethereum layer 2 network Base, where it plans to build an AI agent communication and settlement platform called Moonbeam Protocol. The team said the goal is to let autonomous AI agents find each other, negotiate work and settle payments on-chain without intermediaries. No launch date has been given yet.

Why Moonbeam Is Betting on AI Agents

Moonbeam said the shift reflects where it sees long-term opportunity, allowing the team to focus resources on AI-native on-chain coordination.

The move follows growing interest in agent-driven crypto payments, a trend also being pushed by Coinbase and Circle executives, along with networks like Aptos and Near. Still, adoption remains limited, with Coinbase’s x402 protocol processing only $2 million in volume over the past month.

Several users on X described the pivot as a blow to Polkadot, noting Moonbeam had been one of its most recognized parachains since launching in January 2022.

Token Migration Deadline for GLMR Holders

Moonbeam has told GLMR holders, including those with tokens in staking, lending or other DeFi protocols, to bridge their assets to Base before July 31, 2026. Holders on centralized exchanges do not need to take action. Moonbeam said it will keep supporting its Polkadot parachain during the transition.
