Proposed Hormuz Deal Would Give Iran Control Over Inbound Ship Traffic
A proposed agreement between Iran and Oman aimed at ending five months of war between Iran and the United States would grant Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior Iranian source and two regional officials. The arrangement would mark one of the biggest concessions to Iran since the conflict began, reversing the strait's previous status as freely open to all vessels with no fees.

US Has Long Rejected Iranian Control
While President Trump has said a deal reopening the strait is close, US officials have consistently said they won’t accept Iran controlling access to the world’s most important energy trade route. There was no immediate US comment on the new proposal.
Fee Disputes Remain Unresolved
Iran is reportedly seeking fees between 5% and 7% of cargo value from ships using the strait, while Oman has floated around 3%, and Washington wants no fees at all. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said talks with Oman had “reached fundamental understandings” and were “on the verge of being finalised,” with ships passing through Iranian waters on both inbound and outbound routes.
Iran Warns Gulf States Over Future Strikes
Iran has separately warned Gulf states that any renewed US attack would trigger retaliation against regional energy infrastructure. Iran has reported over 3,400 deaths since the war began February 28, while the US has reported 18 military deaths. Trump said at a Las Vegas rally he’d “rather make a deal” than continue fighting.
