Taiwan’s military will begin a five day combat readiness exercise on Monday as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen defense capabilities and improve preparedness for potential conflict. The drill, known as the “Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise,” will run through Friday and forms part of the island’s annual military training program.
According to Taiwan’s Defence Ministry, the exercise is designed to help military units become familiar with battlefield conditions and operational procedures during the early stages of a combat deployment. The training will focus on improving command systems, logistics support, battlefield preparation and coordination between different branches of the armed forces.
Exercise Based on Potential Surprise Attack Scenario
In recent years, Taiwan has adjusted its military planning to reflect the possibility that China could turn one of its regular military exercises around the island into an actual attack with little warning. As a result, the latest drill will emphasize rapid transitions from peacetime operations to wartime readiness.
The ministry said the exercise will involve real troops operating on actual terrain and using military equipment in real-time conditions. Officials believe this approach will better prepare forces for modern combat situations and improve overall response capabilities.
Chinese Military Flights Continue Near Taiwan
The announcement came as Taiwan reported another increase in Chinese military activity near the island. The Defence Ministry said 21 Chinese military aircraft were detected, including J-16 fighter jets, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft and Y-20 aerial refueling planes.
According to Taiwan, 19 of the aircraft entered airspace southwest of the island before moving into the Western Pacific for long-range training missions. Taiwan’s military monitored the activity and deployed forces to respond.
The combat readiness exercise follows recent military drills that included live-fire testing of Taiwan’s U.S.-made HIMARS rocket systems. Taiwan is also expected to hold its large-scale Han Kuang military exercises later this year.
