Supporters of President Donald Trump are exploring a new legal route to compensate individuals they believe were harmed by what they describe as government “weaponization.” The move comes after plans for a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund were reportedly abandoned.
Instead, attention has shifted to the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), a law that allows people to seek damages from the US government for alleged wrongdoing. Under this process, claimants can file administrative complaints and, if necessary, pursue lawsuits.
January 6 Defendants Among Potential Claimants
Many of the claims are linked to individuals prosecuted after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Hundreds of claim requests have already been submitted, while several lawsuits seeking financial damages have also been filed.
Trump has repeatedly argued that some of his supporters were unfairly targeted during investigations conducted under the previous administration. He recently stated that many of those affected should be compensated.
Debate Over Potential Government Payouts
Supporters of the FTCA approach say it is the most practical and legally established path for compensation. Critics, however, argue that using taxpayer funded settlements in such cases would be highly controversial and could face significant legal and political scrutiny in the months ahead.
