The structure of US diplomacy is facing renewed scrutiny as President Donald Trump increasingly relies on personal envoys, informal communication channels, and direct relationships instead of traditional diplomatic institutions.

According to diplomats and foreign officials, allies across Europe and Asia are adjusting how they engage with Washington as uncertainty grows over official US foreign policy messaging. Concerns intensified after Trump warned Iran in April that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” prompting European governments to seek urgent clarification from the US State Department regarding possible military intentions.

However, diplomats reportedly struggled to get clear answers through official channels, highlighting what some observers describe as a growing disconnect between presidential rhetoric and institutional diplomacy.

Vacant Ambassador Posts Weaken US Diplomatic Reach

A major concern centers on staffing shortages within the State Department. More than half of America’s ambassador positions reportedly remain vacant, leaving several embassies led by temporary officials rather than Senate-confirmed ambassadors.

The changes followed a major restructuring effort led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described the department as overly bureaucratic and announced broad reforms aimed at streamlining operations.

Critics argue the reduction in experienced diplomats has weakened America’s ability to respond during global crises, especially in sensitive regions such as the Middle East.

Informal Diplomacy Gains Influence

As traditional diplomatic channels lose influence, several governments are reportedly turning to unofficial figures with close ties to Trump. These include adviser Jared Kushner and longtime associate Steve Witkoff, both viewed by some foreign officials as key intermediaries to understand White House intentions.

Countries including South Korea and Japan have also developed alternative communication routes to navigate trade, security, and geopolitical tensions more effectively.

Allies Balance Caution and Uncertainty

European governments increasingly appear to treat some of Trump’s public statements cautiously, avoiding immediate reactions while assessing whether comments represent actual policy or negotiating tactics. Still, diplomats warn that dismissing rhetoric too quickly could carry risks if future crises escalate unexpectedly.
