Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on All Goods From Countries That Tax US Tech Firms With Digital Levies
US President Donald Trump escalated transatlantic trade tensions Friday with a blunt warning any country that imposes a digital services tax on American companies will immediately face a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the United States.

US President Donald Trump escalated transatlantic trade tensions Friday with a blunt warning any country that imposes a digital services tax on American companies will immediately face a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the United States.
“Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump posted on Truth social .

The threat came just one day after EU countries scrambled to meet Trump’s July 4 deadline to cut tariffs on US goods — part of a deal agreed last year that capped US tariffs on European goods at 15% in exchange for Europe reducing industrial tariffs to zero. Trump made clear the new 100% tariff threat would override any existing trade deal, signed or otherwise.
France Is the Main Target — And Macron Is Not Backing Down
The immediate flashpoint is France, which has applied a 3% levy since 2019 on revenue earned in France from digital services provided by large global companies. French lawmakers proposed doubling that to 6% last year. French President Emmanuel Macron said last week at the G7 summit that France would not bow to pressure and scrap its digital tax on US tech giants.
Trump had already warned before the summit that the US would have “no choice” but to apply 100% tariffs on French wine if Paris did not eliminate the levy. Friday’s broader threat widens that to every country considering similar measures including Austria, Spain and the UK, all of which have been on the US Trade Representative’s radar for years over digital services taxes the US argues discriminate against American companies.
With US tech giants dominating the global digital services sector, the fight over who gets to tax their revenues is shaping up as one of the defining trade battles of 2026.
