U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly announced $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” is facing growing criticism from lawmakers and legal experts, though challenges to block it may prove difficult.
The fund, created as part of a settlement involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), is intended to compensate people who claim they were harmed by what Trump describes as government “weaponization” or politically motivated legal actions. The amount appears linked to 1776, the year of America’s founding.
The agreement also includes a provision permanently preventing federal authorities from pursuing past tax claims against Trump, his family, and businesses.
Legal Experts Question Oversight and Constitutionality
Critics, including Democratic lawmakers, argue the fund could direct taxpayer money toward Trump allies, including some linked to the January 6 Capitol unrest. Two police officers who defended the Capitol have already filed a lawsuit, claiming the fund may empower individuals who threatened them.
Legal experts say challengers may struggle to establish standing, meaning they must prove direct harm. Questions have also emerged over whether the arrangement bypasses Congress’ spending authority and whether shielding Trump from future tax action violates federal law.
Court Challenges May Face Major Obstacles
Experts believe any serious legal test may come later if rejected claimants challenge how payments are handled. For now, Republican control of Congress makes political opposition less likely, leaving the courts as the main path for scrutiny.
