UK Labour Leadership Challenge Pressure Grows on Keir Starmer

Former UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said he is prepared to trigger a Labour Party leadership contest as early as next week, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Streeting, who resigned from the government last month over disagreements with Starmer’s record, said Labour cannot continue with what he described as “uncertainty and paralysis.”

Streeting Claims Support Among Labour Lawmakers

Streeting said he believes he has the backing of the 81 Labour lawmakers required to launch a formal leadership challenge. He added that he would prefer Starmer to make a decision himself after reflecting over the weekend rather than forcing other party figures to act.

Starmer Vows to Fight for Leadership

Speaking at the G7 summit in Evian, Starmer said he would contest any challenge to his leadership and argued that such a move would not be in the country’s interest.

Burnham and Healey Add to Political Pressure

Attention is also focused on Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who could emerge as a leading contender if he returns to Parliament after a local election in Makerfield. Meanwhile, the recent resignation of Defence Minister John Healey has added to concerns about Starmer’s authority within Labour.
