The United States has introduced a new proposal aimed at reducing tensions between Israel and Lebanon as clashes along the border continue despite a ceasefire announced more than six weeks ago. According to the plan, Hezbollah would halt all attacks on Israel, while Israel would refrain from expanding military operations in Beirut.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the proposal with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict.
Hezbollah Attacks and Israeli Military Response
The proposal comes at a time of increasing violence. Hezbollah recently launched one of its heaviest waves of attacks toward northern Israel since the April ceasefire, leading to school closures and security restrictions in affected areas.
In response, Israeli forces expanded operations in southern Lebanon and captured the historic Beaufort Castle along with a strategic ridge overlooking key areas near the border. Israeli officials described the location as an important military position previously used for attacks against Israeli communities.
Challenges to Reaching a Ceasefire
While Lebanese officials have attempted to advance the proposal, disagreements remain over which side should take the first step toward ending hostilities. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing diplomatic efforts to restore stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
