US Senators Urge Apple to Avoid Chinese Memory Chip Suppliers, Sparking Debate

A bipartisan group of US senators has reportedly pressed Apple to abandon plans to purchase memory chips from Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC, warning the company against relying on components tied to firms flagged by the Pentagon as linked to China’s military.

Lawmakers Demand Commitment From Apple

According to reports, the senators sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking the company to avoid incorporating memory chips from the two Chinese suppliers into its products, even those intended solely for sale in China. The letter reportedly asked Apple to formally commit to this position by August 21, with the effort led by lawmakers from both parties, including representatives from states where major US and South Korean chipmakers are investing heavily in domestic production.

Chinese Analysts Question Motives Behind the Push

Industry experts in China argued the move reflects political and economic self-interest rather than genuine security concerns, suggesting it could distort competitive markets and raise costs for American companies. They noted that global semiconductor sourcing depends heavily on cost, performance and supply reliability, and that politicizing routine procurement decisions risks reducing efficiency across the industry.

The push comes as Apple reportedly explores sourcing options amid a global memory chip shortage that has driven prices sharply higher, partly fueled by surging demand tied to AI processor manufacturing. Apple has already raised prices across several product lines this year, citing component shortages, and analysts suggest further restrictions on Chinese suppliers could tighten supply even more, potentially increasing costs across its product lineup.
