Zcash Ironwood Upgrade Targets July Activation After Orchard Pool Fix

Zcash developers have approved key consensus rule changes for the upcoming Ironwood upgrade, with activation now targeted for late July. The upgrade comes after a serious vulnerability was found in the Orchard shielded pool, which raised concerns about possible unlimited minting of counterfeit ZEC before the issue was patched.

Developer Sean Bowe outlined the changes, saying Ironwood will introduce a new shielded pool built on the Orchard protocol. The goal is to strengthen privacy while improving the safety and reliability of the network after the recent flaw.

New Pool Design and Security Controls

The upgrade introduces a new circuit for the Orchard system that includes a control flag. This flag can disable payments to users in the old Orchard pool while still allowing change notes, which developers say helps maintain privacy safeguards.

After activation, wallets will block new incoming payments to the old pool by limiting the “valueBalance” field. All new transactions will be routed to the new Ironwood pool instead of the older Orchard pool.

Developers also confirmed that the upgrade uses the existing turnstile mechanism to ensure the circulating supply of ZEC remains properly bounded, meaning no extra tokens can be created beyond the allowed supply.

Market Reaction and Recovery

The vulnerability earlier caused ZEC to fall sharply from about $630 to $303, shaking trader confidence. The token has since recovered to around $468, but concerns remain after some traders, including Arthur Hayes, exited positions. Developers say the upgrade aims to restore trust through audits, migration tools, and stronger protocol security.
