Anchorage Digital CEO Says AI Agents Will Need Their Own Bank Accounts
Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley says AI agents are on track to become independent economic participants, capable of handling transactions across cash, card, and crypto systems, not just offering advice. Speaking at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, he compared the vision to how characters in "The Jetsons" interact with their digital assistants.

Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley says AI agents are on track to become independent economic participants, capable of handling transactions across cash, card, and crypto systems, not just offering advice. Speaking at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, he compared the vision to how characters in “The Jetsons” interact with their digital assistants.
Building the Infrastructure for Agent Banking
Anchorage, a federally chartered crypto bank, launched its Agentic Banking platform earlier this year, offering institutions a way to fund and control AI agents through a governance and settlement framework. McCauley said the goal is to package existing crypto rails and stablecoin tools so agents can operate more broadly across traditional and blockchain-based systems.
Why Bank Accounts, Not Just Payments
McCauley argued that simple payment access isn’t enough. Agents will need full banking capabilities, allowing them to send, receive, and hold funds independently. He also pointed to blockchain-based microtransactions, such as small payments for individual API calls, as a natural fit for agent-driven commerce going forward.
