Russian Strikes Hit Kyiv Power Plants, Kill Four and Blanket Capital in Smoke

Overnight drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and nearby areas killed four people, damaged energy infrastructure and left the capital under heavy smoke, Ukrainian officials said Wednesday. Two women and a 14-year old child died in the overnight attacks on the city and a town on its northern edge. A fourth person was killed when a Kyiv warehouse was hit later in the day, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Ukraine Air Defense and Russia’s Claims

Missiles and Drones Launched

Ukraine’s air force said Moscow used anti ship and ballistic missiles along with 188 drones. Of those, five missiles and 155 drones were shot down. Russia confirmed the assault, saying it targeted a Kyiv data centre supporting Ukraine’s military, several power plants around the capital, an industrial site in the Odesa region and port facilities in Izmail.

Power Supply and Winter Fears

Energy company DTEK gave no details on the damage but said crews brought electricity back to 8,000 households. Ukraine expects another winter campaign against power and heating systems, after entire cities went without light and warmth for days or weeks last year.

Kyiv Smoke, Embassy Debris and Regional Spillover

Thick smoke turned into fog over Kyiv, and emergency services told residents to keep windows shut. Klitschko said early information pointed to debris at a Western embassy in the city centre, though he did not name it. A drone also entered Moldovan airspace and exploded near the village of Hirbovet. Romania and Poland scrambled jets, and flights at Poland’s Lublin and Rzeszow airports were briefly halted.

Ukraine Strikes Back at Russia

Ukraine has stepped up attacks inside Russia, hitting refineries and online retailers. One person died in drone attacks in Bryansk, and a Ukrainian strike on the Samara oil region damaged private homes, local governors said.
