Serbian President Vucic Announces Resignation Within Weeks
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday he'll resign within weeks and call early presidential and parliamentary elections, following 18 months of anti-government protests. The demonstrations, led largely by students, were triggered by a deadly railway station awning collapse in Novi Sad in November 2024 that killed 16 people. Protesters blame the disaster on broader government corruption and mismanagement.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday he’ll resign within weeks and call early presidential and parliamentary elections, following 18 months of anti-government protests. The demonstrations, led largely by students, were triggered by a deadly railway station awning collapse in Novi Sad in November 2024 that killed 16 people. Protesters blame the disaster on broader government corruption and mismanagement.
Vucic, in power as president or prime minister for 12 years, told supporters at a Belgrade rally his second and final term, due to expire in mid-2027, would end early. He said his Serbian Progressive Party would run under the name “United Serbia” in the upcoming vote, though he didn’t specify exact dates for his resignation or for dissolving parliament.

Analysts Say This Isn’t The End For Vucic
Many believe Vucic could become prime minister again if his party wins, continuing his hold on power despite stepping down as president, a largely ceremonial role he’s used to wield major influence. Analyst Radivoje Grujic said Vucic likely has a plan that doesn’t involve political retirement.
Student opposition leader Savo Manojlovic said Vucic is trying to preempt his “inevitable fall” given the protests’ growing momentum. Vucic accused protesters of colluding with foreign powers, an allegation they deny, while pledging to fight corruption and boost pensions and healthcare spending.
Serbia’s Balancing Act With The EU
Serbia remains an EU candidate but maintains close ties with Russia and China. Before joining the bloc, it must improve rule of law, ensure fair elections, and crack down on corruption and organized crime, areas where opposition figures accuse Vucic’s government of serious failures.
