FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the organization’s disciplinary process after President Trump praised FIFA’s decision to suspend striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card ban ahead of the US-Belgium World Cup match. Trump had personally asked Infantino to review the case. Balogun played but couldn’t stop a 4-1 loss that sent the US out of the tournament.
Infantino Denies Political Influence
Infantino said FIFA’s judicial bodies acted independently and that he told Trump the case was already under legal review. He confirmed the phone call took place but insisted the outcome followed FIFA’s own rules.
UEFA and Rivals Cry Foul
UEFA called the decision an unjustifiable move that crossed a line, warning it undermines trust in refereeing and competition rules. Belgium’s federation challenged Balogun’s eligibility before kickoff but was told it lacked standing to appeal. Switzerland’s federation and England manager Thomas Tuchel also questioned the ruling, especially after England defender Jarell Quansah received a red card of his own days later.
Trump Also Targets the Referee
Trump criticized referee Raphael Claus’s past performances without giving specifics. Brazil’s football federation defended Claus’s integrity and professional record.
Football Figures Slam the Decision
Former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said politics has no place in football decisions. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter warned that political intervention threatens the game’s independence, questioning where the precedent could lead.
