Strait Closure Threatens Global Oil Flow

Iran said it closed the strait after firing a warning shot at a vessel it accused of taking an unauthorized route, warning the waterway would stay shut until “the end of US interference in this region.” The strait normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil and LNG supplies, and its closure has already pushed energy prices higher, adding pressure to global inflation ahead of US congressional elections in November.

Diplomacy Continues Despite Fighting

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Omani officials to discuss safe passage through the strait, with talks continuing at technical and political levels. A draft Omani proposal reportedly calls for free navigation through a southern corridor while requiring prior approval for ships using the northern route through Iranian waters.

Washington wants Iran to publicly commit to ending ship attacks and keeping all lanes open without tolls. Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, separately vowed vengeance for his father’s death in the war’s opening strikes, a message tied to funeral ceremonies held for former leader Ali Khamenei.
