Tensions Rise Amid US-Iran Agreement
The renewed strikes come after the announcement of a US-Iran agreement aimed at ending the wider conflict. Although the full text has not been released, Pakistan, one of the mediators, said the deal includes provisions related to Lebanon.
Trump Urges Netanyahu to Show Restraint
At the G7 summit in France, Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needed to be “more responsible with respect to Lebanon.” He also said Israel and Hezbollah had been fighting for too long and that civilian casualties were rising.
Trump confirmed he has a strong relationship with Netanyahu but disagreed with recent Israeli strikes, saying one recent attack was “too much.” He also stated that the United States remains central to Israel’s security.
Ongoing Cross-Border Violence
Both Israel and Hezbollah have continued exchanging attacks since the US-Iran agreement was announced. Earlier strikes in Beirut, carried out after rocket fire from Hezbollah, further strained efforts to stabilize the situation.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said Israeli forces will remain in Lebanon as long as necessary, while Iran has warned that continued Israeli military presence could violate the interim agreement.
Peace Deal Talks Continue in Switzerland
The US-Iran memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed in Switzerland, with details still not publicly released. Trump has said the deal includes guarantees that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen for global shipping.
